Go New York, Go New York, Go!

So on Sunday afternoon, I was on my way into NYC to catch the St. John’s - Providence tilt at MSG, and was sitting next to these two guys on the bus across the river (well, under the river, for you literal bastards) who were talking about the NBA. The guy sitting directly to my left was talking about the Knicks, while the guy in the window seat was discussing how the Dallas Mavericks had run off a streak of wins yet again this season. Aisle guy then follows up by saying “what Dallas is doing, that doesn’t mean shit … Now the Knicks, they’re playin’ hard.”

Well, maybe the players are, but when Dallas is at 50-9, and the Knicks are rocking a 28-33 record, I’m not sure that this particular statement was worth more than the laugh I got out of it.

  2. Dallas may 50-9, but the Knicks account for one of those 9 losses. Moreover, I think what my fellow Knicks fan was saying is that what Dallas is doing don’t mean shit *to him*. Actually I’m indebted to you for reporting such enthusiasm for the Knicks on behalf of New Yorkers. Considering what we’ve been through with the loss of the Towers (Ewing and Camby), coach Van Gundy and basically all our past offensive weapons and all the accompanying esprit d’corps, I personally consider 28-33 to be quite impressive. I look back to 1982 when a 14-26 Knicks team (Bernard King, Truck Robinson, Bill Cartwright, Paul Westphal, Rory Sparrow, Sly Williams, Ernie Grunfeld, et al) went on to finish 44-38 and made it to the second round of the playoffs where they fell to the overloaded 76ers and hope that this year’s team is performing a similar turn of fate.

  4. Thanks for the comment, Jake! As far as Dallas, point taken, but the rest of the conversation was about how the Knicks were playing much harder, and that Dallas was just cruising, and didn’t have to put in an effort. While they might be “cruising” that doesn’t mean they aren’t working hard every day.

As for the Knicks, good luck to them. As a never-Knicks fan, I can’t say I care either way. Just got a kick out of someone who was truly “behind” his team in this fashion.
