Topps sold to Eisner & Co.
Well, just caught while reviewing my RSS from the plane that Michael Eisner and his investor group were approved this week in their efforts to take over Topps, Inc., the baseball card company. I’m guessing I’m actually okay with this, as I definitely wanted the company to live and breathe for as long as it can, as part of my childhood. Sure, Upper Deck came in and gave us pretty, shiny cards that made the cost of a pack skyrocket past the $1 (if not $3) mark, and Donruss was fun (you know you want a Rated Rookie t-shirt), but Topps was always the one baseball card pack you could snag almost wherever you were. Now, baseball cards are relegated to the impulse buy section at Target, and the fun corner baseball card store has moved on. Oh, those were the days.
So, congrats to Michael Eisner and his band of merry baseball card fans – keep our beloved Topps churning, please. And yes, I am still known to eat the gum if I snag a pack of 1987 Topps cards, thankyouverymuch.
