Afternoon Random Ten: 10/7/09 (Run This Town Edition)

Earlier this week, Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards was accused of punching one of LeBron James’ friends outside a nightclub.

This morning, just two days after the alleged assault, Edwards has been traded to the New York Jets. Coincidence? One would think not. “Respect my authority!”

  • Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye West – “Run This Town” – Certainly reads that way. Damn.
  • Cam’ron, Jay-Z, Juelz Santana – “Welcome To New York City” – One might hold down Cleveland, but you know Hov wouldn’t mind a certain someone making his way to the Big Apple, right?
  • Chamillionaire feat. Killer Mike & Pastor Troy – “Southern Takeover” – The dirty dirty certainly has a pretty good hand in the game these days, huh?
  • T.I., Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne – “Swagga Like Us” – Ain’t that the truth.
  • Three 6 Mafia – “Trap Boom” – “I make the trap boom boom, I make the trap boom boom.”
  • Al Kapone – “Whoop That Trick” – ask me one day about how this song and one other track from “Hustle & Flow” was apparently done. Great story.
  • David Banner & Lil’ Flip – “Like A Pimp” – “We run trains (choo choo) all night”
  • DJ Khaled, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Juelz Santana, Fat Joe, Rick Ross & Dre – “Brown Paper Bag” – Containing one of my favorite lyrics of the last couple years, “they used to call me the pyrex kid, a.k.a. young arm & hammer” from Jeezy. Wow.
  • Eric B. & Rakim – “I Ain’t No Joke” – CLASSIC.
  • Freeway feat. Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel – “What We Do” – Ahhh, Philadelphia Freeway.

Afternoon Random Ten: 9/30/09 (Colors of Fall Edition)

It’s certainly feeling like Fall has hit, at least in the NY/NJ area, so here’s a batch of bands and songs that feature the colors of the season.

  • The Golden Filter – “Thunderbird” – Have I mentioned yet how awesome this crew is? Yes? Well, I’m mentioning it again.
  • Chevelle – “The Red” – What, you thought I only listened to “Send The Pain Below” or something?
  • Amy LaVere – “Green Grass” – If you haven’t listened to Amy LaVere and her extra awesome band yet, then you probably should. I had the pleasure of working with her on “$5 Cover: Memphis” this year, and had a blast getting to see them perform live a number of times.
  • Everclear – “Brown Eyed Girl” – What, no one’s allowed to cover this song?
  • Pearl Jam – “Yellow Ledbetter” – I think this might be my favorite PJ song, or at least in the top 5.
  • Chris Isaak – “Blue Spanish Sky” – thankfully for us all, we still have blue skies in the fall.
  • The Chemical Brothers – “Orange Wedge” – Orange skies, orange wedges, orange leaves on trees, pumpkins. Whatever.
  • Coldplay – “Yellow” – You know that point in the middle of winter when the snow melts (if you actually get snow) and the grass is all yellow and gross? Yeah, that.
  • Goldfrapp – “Crystalline Green” – Oh, how this song is so underrated.
  • Ned’s Atomic Dustbin – “Grey Cell Green” – Oh, how this is one of my most favorite bands that someone got me into back in high school. Also, I’m old. “You’re telling me it’s in the trees, in the trees.”

Afternoon Random Ten: 9/23/09 (Your Number’s Up Edition)

It’s today’s Afternoon Random Ten time, and today’s edition brings you number-friendly songs and artists. Enjoy!

  • Phoenix – “1901″ – enjoyed this one in the Cadillac commercials yet?
  • The Clash – “Four Horsemen” – what a fun band that I wish I had caught live. In any case, a slightly more “fun” song than the title would make it seem like.
  • Three 6 Mafia – “That’s Right” – I think if it were possible to ruin CDs anymore from overplaying songs, this one would be one that my car stereo had womped on.
  • 311 – “Six” – When I tell you that 311’s “Grassroots” is like fifteen years old, you’re not going to freak out, right? Nick Hexum referencing “The Raiders of LA” is more than amusing.
  • Guster – “Thirty Seconds Silence” – If you know this song / album, you’ll know that I cheated right here. But it’s funny if you get the joke.
  • The Beastie Boys – “Three MCs and One DJ” – getting phone calls from Mix Master Mike has to be the awesomest thing.
  • The Cranberries – “Twenty One” – Funny how a lot more of the songs from this group are much more “like” this one than the few songs that got a ton of radio play, etc.
  • Blur – “Song 2″ – here’s to wondering what the population of people who KNOW the title of this song vs. the the number of people who are familiar with the song as the “woo hoo” song.
  • Luniz – “I Got 5 On It” – This song wins at pretty much whatever it wants.
  • A Static Lullaby – “We Go To Eleven” – A joke that will never, ever, get old.

Afternoon Random Ten: 9/18/09 (Explicit Friday)

Alright ******** and ************* and *******, it’s Friday, and it’s time for a playlist of ONLY tunes that fly the “explicit” flag in my iTunes. Here’s how it rolled out today.

  • Jay-Z / M.O.P – “You Don’t Know (Remix) – oh, how I could listen to Busta and the M.O.P. crew roll onto just about anyone’s tracks.
  • T.I. feat. Rihanna – “Live Your Life” – one of the best songs in my collection, and one that I have pretty much never skipped past.
  • Rage Against The Machine – “Without A Face” –
  • Avril Lavigne – “Girlfriend” – What? Is there a question?
  • Bravehearts – “Quick To Back Down” – come on. Songs with Nas, Lil Jon, and the whole crew? There’s damn sure some explicit **** going down.
  • Bun B, Lil’ Flip & Young Buck – “Game Over” – best song with Pac-Man music ever. Oh, wait, that didn’t work out so well
  • DJ Rap – “F**k With Your Head” – SO underrated as a DJ in the masses.
  • Warren G – “Regulate” – F**K ME. This is from 1994?
  • Lil Wayne – “Fireman” – all songs should have sirens, no?
  • Nelly – “Country Grammar” – I’m pretty sure that if this song and Q-Tip’s “Vivrant Thing” were the only two videos played all day long, it would have been okay at that time.

Afternoon Random Ten: 9/15/09 (Songs I’ve Seen Live Edition)

Been a bit of a crazy week, VMAs and all, but I’m finally catching back up in this place. After a couple brushes with fame on Sunday night, it’s back to the usual stuff.

Here’s ten songs I’ve seen live.

  • Phoenix – “1901″ – I saw them on Sunday night and they were absolutely awesome. Below this list you’ll catch their performance of this show on “It’s On with Alexa Chung” from earlier this summer.
  • Pearl Jam – “MFC” – I saw this song performed at this show way back in 1998.
  • Al Kapone – “The Music” – I had the pleasure of working with Al on “$5 Cover: Memphis” earlier this year, and got to see him perform with his band and DJ at SXSW ‘09. Gotta love seeing a hip-hop act throw it down with a live band after always having done so.
  • Kings of Leon – “Use Somebody” – I caught their rehearsal at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards in LA earlier this year, and it was amazing to watch in such a cool setting.
  • NIN – “The Day The World Went Away” – downright amazing. Saw them play with A Perfect Circle at MSG on May 9, 2000, in a show when Trent was joined on stage for “Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson after a rendition of “Starfuckers, Inc.” That was the same day I found out it really wasn’t that bad of a walk to go from Wall St. up to MSG.
  • Rage Against The Machine – “People Of The Sun” – August 20, 1997. RATM w/ the Wu. Wow.
  • A Tribe Called Quest – “Can I Kick It” – It’s a great song… have you caught Lykke Li’s version?
  • Twista – “Overnight Celebrity” – Saw him with Chingy at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA in August of 2004. Craziness.
  • Sevendust – “Bitch” – I went to see The Nixons at Tradewinds in Sea Bright, NJ in 1997, and was absolutely blown away by this band. I’m pretty sure all of us in the crew that night bought their cd.
  • Jimmies Chicken Shack – “Spiderweb” – saw them at Birch Hill in December of 2008 (thanks to Google, you can see someone else’s shots of the show here
