Earthquake in SF area?

Apparently, there was an earthquake of some note in the San Francisco area just a few moments ago. Here’s what I saw on Twitterrific:

Hope everyone’s okay out there.

Eric Rice updates us with a link to the USGS, which notes it as a 5.6.

Already CLEARed

Okay, well I already passed the screening by the TSA, and should be expecting my CLEAR card within the next week or two. I’m very psyched to be able to use it, but The Girlfriend thinks that I’m going to use it when we travel and leave her behind at the security gate. I’m not *that* mean, am I?

CLEAR part 2

Okay, so I finished up the setup of my CLEAR account at Newark airport. Took about ten minutes, did all kinds of fun fingerprints and retinal scans. Best part was that they ask what airlines you fly, and after I said that I typically am on Continental, they offered me a note card where you could share your thoughts on getting CLEAR set up at the terminals at EWR where pretty much all of the Continental flights go out of. Now I just have to wait 2-4 weeks for my in depth background check and I’m good to go.

If you haven’t already, and you live in a city where CLEAR is working, then go sign up.

Another Apple convert

So, a colleague walks in this morning and says “we bought an iMac for the kids that we’ll be giving them for Christimas this year. I plug it in, turn it on, and within three minutes it’s booted and on my wireless network. I’m already set up for any parental controls I need, the software is all loaded, and we’re good to go. I need to get one for myself the next time I buy a computer.”

Now, let’s return to your previously scheduled programming.

Anna steps up for Pittsburghians (Pittsburghites? whatever.)

Check out this gem of a letter-to-the-editor in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, written by a colleague of mine. Scroll down about 3/4 of the way down the page, to “Mr. Ravenstahl, you are not the average 27-year-old.”

Anna is responding to the comments of Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who says that his actions, including using a vehicle paid for with Homeland Security dollars to attend a Toby Keith concert, were justified, and that as a 27-year old, he shouldn’t be expected to not “go to concerts like I always have, and go to have a drink with my wife in bars.” Apparently he neglected to add “in cars paid for by the government” to that statement.

Yay @ Less Fatal Crashes

I’ve gotta say, it’s not too hard to be happy about this story about how fatal plane crashes are down significantly over the last decade. Especially as someone who flies entirely too much.

Happy Jawbone!

You can all thank the Notorious MiG for the fact that I’m thoroughly enjoying my Jawbone. No, not the real one, the digital one.

Topps sold to Eisner & Co.

Well, just caught while reviewing my RSS from the plane that Michael Eisner and his investor group were approved this week in their efforts to take over Topps, Inc., the baseball card company. I’m guessing I’m actually okay with this, as I definitely wanted the company to live and breathe for as long as it can, as part of my childhood. Sure, Upper Deck came in and gave us pretty, shiny cards that made the cost of a pack skyrocket past the $1 (if not $3) mark, and Donruss was fun (you know you want a Rated Rookie t-shirt), but Topps was always the one baseball card pack you could snag almost wherever you were. Now, baseball cards are relegated to the impulse buy section at Target, and the fun corner baseball card store has moved on. Oh, those were the days.

So, congrats to Michael Eisner and his band of merry baseball card fans – keep our beloved Topps churning, please. And yes, I am still known to eat the gum if I snag a pack of 1987 Topps cards, thankyouverymuch.

Ice-T at the A&P

Caught Ice-T and his wife at the local grocery store last night while I was at the butcher’s counter.

Just happened to be trying out a new video camera for kicks and the guy at the counter pointed him out to me, so I snagged a quick glimpse.

Shots here, here and here. And yes, he does bag his own groceries.
