Morning Random Ten: 10/15/09 (My Favorite Pearl Jam Songs Edition)

Those of you familar with my musical tastes won’t be too thrown off by this list, those of you that don’t might not care one way or another. For the uninitiated, Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands (and the one I think I have the most songs from in my music collection), so I’ve listened to a few songs in my day. So here’s ten of my favorite songs, if you can even drill it down to ten, in no particular order. Also note that it’s REALLY hard to do this without making most of the songs come from the “Ten” album. Just sayin’.

  • “Angel” – One of the band’s “Christmas singles” that are sent to the fan club. The first time I heard it was when this guy Jeff I worked with in college let me borrow the record it was on, which is still the only place I’ve ever seen it. It’s an amazingly dramatic song that isn’t necessarily in line with the rest of the band’s songs, and maybe that’s what makes it so good.
  • “Porch” – My favorite memory of this song is the guy who sang it in a talent show in high school, whom we were all told would edit the first line of the song when it came down to the live session. He didn’t. And if you don’t know it, it’s “What the fuck is this world…”
  • “Rearviewmirror” – Listening to it, it seems like one of the more “simply built” songs, but when you get into it, it’s much more complicated than that.
  • “Black” – This is either my #1 or #2 favorite song of the bunch, I really think. It’s so well thought out, the lyrics are amazing, it just sounds awesome all around.
  • “Dirty Frank” – He’s a gourmet cook, you know.
  • “Yellow Ledbetter” – Just wow. How many encores do you think this has closed out? This is the other song I (and probably a lot of other PJ fans) would have a hard time saying it wasn’t a favorite.
  • “Even Flow” – Again, hard to not just pick “Ten” and be done with it. I chose this over “Jeremy,” which is equally awesome.
  • “Habit” – It’s all about the cadence and the raspy voice on this one.
  • “State Of Love And Trust” – “A compliment for us is a compliment for you.”
  • “Dissident” – Along with being an excellent box set that I was never able to complete as it was sold in a couple of different packages until digital music became the norm, this is a crazy good song.

Honorable mentions: “Supersonic” – It’s new, it’s fast, it’s loud, and it’s fun. Suck it up, I like it. “Leash” – Loud, loud, loud.

Morning Random Ten: 10/6/09 (10 of 383 Edition)

Today’s Morning Random Ten is made up of songs that I’ve added to my library of late – there are about 383 of them – so prepare for some new (or old) stuff.

  • Jay-Z – “History” – off the “More Than A Game” soundtrack, which is actually pretty hot.
  • The Temper Trap – “Love Lost” – First time listening to them, in all honesty, and am just figuring them out. Kind of a cool sound, though.
  • Madcon – “Beggin” – You might not *realize* you’ve heard this song, but you love it. You just don’t know it yet.
  • Mika – “Touches You”
  • Boys Like Girls – “Someone Like You” – Found it strangely peculiar that this song came after the last one in shuffle play. Just sayin’.
  • Joe – “Worst Case Scenario”
  • Pill – “Bunkin”
  • Jay-Z – “My President Is Black (Remix)”
  • Paramore – “Where The Lines Overlap” – It’s rare that I’ll buy an album and actually like all of the songs, but that’s certainly the case with Paramore’s new “brand new eyes”
  • LMFAO – “La La La” – these guys are so much fun it’s crazy.

Morning Random Ten: 10/1/09 (“O” Names Edition)

Yep that’s right, bands, singers, whatever that start with an “o” get some love in this edition of the Morning Random Ten.

  • Oasis – “Don’t Look Back In Anger” – a lot of people say “Wonderwall,” but I’ve always been a huge fan of this song, and it’s probably #1 that pops into my head when I think of Oasis.
  • Ol’ Dirty Bastard feat. Kelis – “Got Your Money” – ODB, oh how I miss his randomness.
  • Omarion feat. Gucci Mane – “I Get It In” – betcha haven’t heard this song yet.
  • OMC – “How Bizarre” – I love the car in this video. Also, how bizarre is it that this is the third time this week I’ve played this song, now?
  • Onyx – “Throw Ya Gunz (Live)” – There was a period of time in my life where Onyx was the ish, in a big way.
  • Orgy – “Stitches” – This song was SO big for awhile, and now I’m seeing that it was 11 years ago. Where the hell did my 20s go?
  • Outkast – “B.O.B.” – ohmythisisthebestfastsonginmycollectionandtheresnothingyoucandoaboutitHAH!
  • O + S – “Permanent Scar” – Kind of bummed to have missed this band, who apparently played at SXSW somewhere this year…
  • Owl City – “Fireflies” – Funny, I’d gotten this as a free download on iTunes not to long ago, and it’s currently the #3 single on the iTunes chart – selling for $1.29 a pop – proving that clearly, synthpop isn’t dead.
  • The Offspring – “Self Esteem” – I always told people that this was the first song to use the word “dweeb” – not knowing if it were true or not. It was amusing.

Morning Random Ten: 9/29/09 (Tuesday Morning Dance Fest Edition)

It’s Tuesday morning, I’ve already listened to a whole ton of dance music, so now I’m going to subject you to some as well. Enjoy!

  • Britney Spears – “3″ – Just came out this morning.
  • The Golden Filter – “Solid Gold” – if only I could see The Golden Filter play every day. [props to Jolina on hooking me up at SXSW this year]
  • DJ Baby Anne – “I Wanna Rock (Option Escape Remix)” – what, drum & bass with a remix spin is too much for you in the morning?
  • Rage Against The Machine – “Renegades of Funk (The Crystal Method Remix)” – Bet you never thought that’d happen.
  • Aquagen – “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” – Christine McNabb is solely to blame for this being in my music collection.
  • Ascencion – “Someone” – anything that has a “slacker” remix can’t be wrong, right?
  • The Aurora – “Real Life” – like you’re actually pondering anything “real” when listening to most dance or club stuff…
  • Basement Jaxx – “Lucky Star (Jaxx Klub Remix)” – before you ask, this isn’t any sort of mix of the Madonna song.
  • BT – “Loving You More (Oakenfold & Osbourne Mix)” – Intense.
  • DHT feat. Edmee – “I Miss You” – One of my favorites off the “Trance Party” volumes. Pounds in the car.

Morning Random Ten: 9/28/09 (Days Of The Week Edition)

It’s Monday, and while I don’t think I have enough songs dedicated to this particular (horrible) day, I’ve got a ton that do have to do with it and the rest of the week, so here goes.

  • Kylie Minogue – “Can’t Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head” – This sounds exactly like you think it’s going to sound like, in case you were wondering.
  • Stone Temple Pilots – “Naked Sunday” – Oh, how I miss the early 90’s and the loudness of music.
  • Dr. Dre – “Keep Their Heads Ringin’” – Off the “Friday” soundtrack, you know. “I get plenty of ass so call me an astronaut.”
  • Ludacris – “Saturday (Oooh Oooh)” – “sticky icky icky”
  • Thursday – “Concealer” – I love the music, have never gotten into the singer’s stylings.
  • Stone Temple Pilots – “Church on Tuesday” – These guys totally need to just put out another four albums and make people like me happy already.
  • The Nymphets – “Wednesday Morning” – I’m happy (unhappy?) to report that this is the only “Wednesday” song that I have in my collection. Interesting.
  • Sneaker Pimps – “Wasted Early Sunday Morning” – Oh, Sneaker Pimps, how you continue to steal my soul. Where have you gone!?
  • Fall Out Boy – “Saturday” – I’m good to go, too. Or something. Whatever.
  • U2 – “Sunday Bloody Sunday” – Did you expect me to close this with anything else?

Morning Random Ten: 9/25/09 (Pile On In The Ride Edition)

If it’s not a collabo with a number of artists, it’s not making the list.

  • Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem – “Forever” – just go watch the video.
  • Paul Wall feat. Bun B & BG – “Trill” – I still think it’s crazy that a lot of people use the word “bling” on the regular, yet they have no idea who BG is. And probably never well.
  • Rick Ross feat. Jay-Z & Young Jeezy – “Hustlin (Remix)” – BAWSS. “White on white G4 hater get lost.”
  • Snoop Dogg feat. Master P, Nate Dogg, Butch Cassidy & The Eastsidaz – “Lay Low” – you know that anything with Nate Dogg on it is going to slay, right?
  • Three 6 Mafia feat. Young Buck, Eightball & MJG – “Stay Fly” – ii-ii-ii-ii-ii-iiii-iiii-iii-iii
  • Cam’ron feat. Hell Rell, JR Writer & Jim Jones – “Get ‘Em Daddy” – Cam’ron always has had the ability snag some hot crews for a remix…
  • Chamillionaire feat. Lil Wayne & Rasaq – “Fly As The Sky” – Saying that Houston represents on its radio stations for its locals is an understatement, you know.
  • Chingy feat. Snoop Dogg & Ludacris – “Holidae In” – Let me just say, having seen this song performed live, you can make fun of it all you want but it damn sure gets a couple thousand people up and at it.
  • The Crystal Method feat. Rahzel & DJ Swamp – “The American Way” – That’s three pretty far underrated pieces put together on a pretty awesome track that most of you probably haven’t gotten to listen to.
  • Dem Franchise Boyz feat. Bow Wow, Da Brat & The Kid Slim – “I Think They Like Me” – it’s only right that we have a whole crew of people hitting it up for track #10.

There are a number of honorable mentions, but I’ll save ‘em for another day.

Morning Random Ten: 9/24/09 (It’s My Birthday And I’ll Play What I Want To Edition)

Yeah, yeah, it’s my birthday, I’m another year older, yada yada yada. In any case, here’s some songs that I tend to listen to often, perhaps a bit too much.

  • 3OH!3 – “PunkBitch” – “when I come up in the club, I’m talking mad shit”
  • Glasvegas – “Go Square Go” – I probably can’t say it enough, but this is probably the first or second coolest band I saw play in 2009.
  • T.I. featuring Rihanna – “Live Your Life” – I should put this on the list twice just for good measure.
  • Beastie Boys – “Hey Ladies” – If we were to do an all-time list of things I listen to a lot, then this would probably be in the top five for sure.
  • Sneaker Pimps – “Spin Spin Sugar” – One of my favorite songs. Ever. And not just because I’m addicted to Pumas.
  • Stone Temple Pilots – “Meatplow” – If I were able to ask Scott Weiland just one question
  • The Cardigans – “Erase-Rewind” – Another band that I could probably listen to all day long.
  • Linkin Park – “Pts.of.athrty” – Well thank you, Jay Gordon. How many times have YOU said “Forfeit the game before somebody else takes you out of the frame, and puts your name to shame” since hearing this song?
  • Rob Dougan – “Clubbed To Death (Kuraymino Mix)” – You might recognize this as the nice happy orchestra sounding song from “The Matrix” that quickly turns into a drumbeat manifesto of sorts. Download it now.
  • DJ Baby Anne & Jen Lasher – “Dementia” – AWESOME way to roll out of bed in the morning. And one of those songs where you might as well not bother making it a ringtone, because you couldn’t decide which chunk to use.

Morning Random Ten: 9/22/09 (Fall Edition)

It’s Tuesday. Fall begins today. In honor of that very sad, sad news (well, unless you hate summer), we’ve got a “Fall” edition of the Morning Random Ten.

  • Audioslave – “Until We Fall” – I’m still bummed that nothing “bigger” came of a band made up of Chris Cornell and most of RATM. Just sayin’.
  • Fall Out Boy – “America’s Suitehearts” – One of the cooler bands that I’ve had the pleasure of working with on various things at MTV.
  • Influenza – “Let Me Fall” – It’s off an album called “Assault and Battery” in case you were wondering what it might sound like. Everyone should have a bit more Jen Lasher and Baby Anne in their lives.
  • Lykke Li – “Let It Fall” – “So happy.”
  • Pearl Jam – “Breakerfall” – Oh, how I’m totally addicted to getting my Pearl Jam on.
  • Rage Against The Machine – “Ashes In The Fall” – Oh, Tom Morello, how you toy with my soul.
  • Teenage Fanclub & De La Soul – “Fallin’” – Off one of the more underrated soundtracks, like, ever – “Judgment Night” – seriously.
  • Tom Petty – “Free Fallin’” – You didn’t think this song would miss the list, did you?
  • Velvet Revolver – “Fall To Pieces” – Yet another band on the list of “things that should the most awesome things ever, but don’t quite make it, despite their interior awesomeness.”
  • Joss Stone – “I’ve Fallen In Love With You” – Joss Stone is absolutely unstoppable and I wish she would just put out about seven more albums, because I could actually listen to her ALL DAY LONG. That is all.

Morning Random Ten: 9/21/09 (Stuff I Got This Summer Edition)

Here’s a whipped together mix of songs I’m listening to this morning, all acquired sometime over the summer. Okay, since like May. Whatever.

  • Asher Roth – “Be By Myself” – A very fun track with Cee-Lo on the hook. Asher performed in our office a few months back, and it was pretty cool seeing him in a small group on the 24th floor.
  • Rick Ross – “Mafia Music” – This record wasn’t anywhere near as good as Ross’ last effort, IMHO, but he’s got like half the planet appearing on songs, so who can complain about that.
  • Depeche Mode – “Fragile Tension” – I’m pretty sure that if Depeche Mode continued making albums until the end of time, people would listen.
  • Silversun Pickups – “Catch & Release” – another band that we got to see here in the office, and we also had at “It’s On with Alexa Chung” earlier this summer. Really enjoy them, and this is one of my favorite tracks off their latest.
  • ATB – “Luminescene” – ATB’s always been a consistent pick-me-up, and really really good driving music.
  • Veruca Salt – “Disconnected” – VS is one of my fave bands of the last two decades. They’re loud (most of the time), they’re catchy when they wanna be, and I just think they’re fun to listen to. Nina Gordon leaving the band was one of the more destructive things I’d seen in awhile to a band I was into…
  • Al Kapone – “Poppin’ Tags” – “I just popped a new tag…” I gotta say, now that I’d had the chance to make my way down to Memphis for a few days earlier this year, I can see why people dig on that Three 6 Mafia et al sound. It’s hot.
  • Britney Spears – “Circus (Villians Remix)” – Hate all you want, but this is the one disc I’d ever had playing in my car when I parked a car with valet only to find it playing like 7 or 8 tracks later when I got in the car.
  • Franz Ferdinand – “Take Me Out (Daft Punk Remix)” – No, really.
  • Green Day – “East Jesus Nowhere” – Oh, how I love to jam out to Green Day in the office. Do they ever stop?

Morning Random Ten: 9/17/09 (Catchy Edition)

Here’s a batch of catchy tracks that you’ll probably kill me for getting stuck in your head. And don’t think overratingly catchy, just catchy like you definitely get going at your desk if you happen to be listening at work. Or in the car. Or on the subway. I could do this all day.

  • Jay-Z, T.I., Lil Wayne, Kanye West – “Swagga Like Us” – sorry, but M.I.A.’s beat is undefeated. Even if Jeremy Pepper can’t stand her.
  • Cam’ron featuring Juelz Santana – “Oh Boy” – damn these hooks and their catchiness.
  • 3OH!3 – “Don’t Trust Me” – “Don’t trust a ho.”
  • Three 6 Mafia – “Ridin’ Spinners” – Okay, this is closely tied with “Weak Azz Bitch,” “Stay Fly,” and about a dozen others from the Memphis crew.
  • Rick Ross – “Hustlin’” – one of the more catchy tunes out of the dirty dirty in awhile that wasn’t out of ATL. (Sorry, @extraface)
  • OutKast – “B.O.B.” – It’s not Pitchfork’s #1 song of the 2000’s for nothing.
  • La Rissa – “I Do Both Jay & Jane” – Screw you, you know you have this song.
  • Metro Station – “Shake It” – this is me pleading the fifth.
  • N.W.A. – “Gangsta Gangsta” – If you’ve ever heard it, you’d know what I was talking about.
  • Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” – you knew it would end this way, right?
